Argos was officially established in its current form in 1973, having started out several years earlier as the ‘Green Shield Gift House’. It is now the largest general-goods retailer in the UK, operating 737 stores nationwide and employing thousands of staff.
It was a major part of the Home Retail Group for some time, along with the now-defunct companies Homebase and Habitat. It also owns or owned several other companies such as cosmetics firm Elizabeth Duke (now also defunct) and electronic manufacturers Alba and Bush. While many companies in the same sector have collapsed over years of association, Argos has stodd the test of time and remains the largest general goods retailer in the UK, going from strength to strength.
Argos once ran its own price comparison website, ArgosCompare, in conjunction with BeatThatQuote.com. However this was taken offline 2011 due to its failure to comply with new guidance laws issued by the UK Financial Service Authority. Its TV service Argos TV was also closed in 2013 so that the company could focus its resources in other areas.

How does the card work?
Just like a store card, the Argos card allows you to ‘buy now and pay later’ making purchases easy and affordable, any time of the month. For example, if you spend up to £200 on any piece of furniture, your card will allow you to enjoy your furniture today, and pay it back 12 months later. To ensure your payment plan is running smoothly and you have an affordable way of paying back your purchase, you will receive monthly statements from your card in the post. After three months you will be given the option of paying back the balance to avoid being charged interest or you can choose to spread out your payments over a longer period. If the balance is not paid, and the payment plan extended, you will be charged interest rate from the purchase, and this will be added to the total amount you owe. A minimum amount each month will be required, you can pay off bigger amounts at any time. The card does not only allow you to afford things you couldn’t before, it also gives you the opportunity to receive exclusive offers and vouchers to spend in store. You can control your own payment amounts or easily re-pay your purchase with fixed monthly payment plans.
How do I apply for a card?
You can apply for the card online. There is an option to ‘apply and buy’ which lets you shop for what you need, and then apply for the card at the checkout, effectively killing two birds with one stone. If you do not want to shop today, but would like an Argos card for future use, you can just simply apply via the Argos website. To apply you must first be eligible by being over 18 years old and a permanent resident of the UK for over one year. You also need to be able to provide your bank details and addresses from the past two years. You then need to create an Argos an account or login if you have an existing one. Here you will be able to set up your Argos store card, including choosing your credit plan. By logging into My Argos Card, you can manage your card online. If you are having any issues regarding your card, or are struggling to make payments, please call the Argos card services contact number. The card can also be used in Homebase stores. If your application is unsuccessful, it could be for a number of reasons, as many things are taken into account when seeing if a person is eligible for a card. It could be that your credit history does not meet the Argos requirements. If you want to dispute this, or are unsure why Argos are refusing your card application, you an contact the credit reference agency used when assessing your situation.
How do I cancel my Argos card?
You can cancel your card up to 14 days after activating it, if nothing has been bought on it. If you have outstanding payments on the card, you will need to pay off the amount in full before you cancel your card. Whilst you may not be able to cancel your card when it has an outstanding balance, you can still ask Argos to reduce the limit you are allowed to spend on it, or if Argos are increasing your limit, you can tell them not to. Your card can only be used by you, as the person that applied for it. Once your total balance has been paid off, and any interest also paid, you will be able to stop using your card for purchases, if you no longer feel the need to use it.
How do I activate my card?
Activating the Argos credit card is fairly simple. You can register on my Argos card, or download the app. Once you have registered and signed up for a new card, it will be active straight away and you can begin shopping with it. The best way to keep on top of things is to keep your personal details up to date on your account.
